Exxon Knew about climate change, Credit, Livekindly
Though it aims to zero out greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, Shell also plans to boost production at the Perdido oil project in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico by April 2025, while spending a billion dollars within the next ten years to boost natural gas production in Nigeria, after seeing a five-billion-dollar opportunity in Nigeria's Bonga North oil field.
Though it claims to address the plastic waste challenge, ExxonMobil produced 9.2 million metric tons of polyethylene in 2022, an increase compared to the production volumes in 2021, while an analysis revealed that the oil giant contributed 5.9 million metric tons to the global plastic waste, as the largest producer of single-use plastics.
Just as Aramco in Saudi Arabia sees the importance of creating more sustainable products and solutions, its surrogate Sabic trumpets the need for recycling plastic products, even though it knows only nine percent of the plastics ever produced had been recycled, and only 19 percent incinerated.
In essence, Big Oil companies lie when they say they plan to zero out greenhouse gas production by 2050, lie when they say they want to address the plastic waste challenge, and lie when they issue statements on the recycling of plastic products.
Shell reported an adjusted earnings of $28.25 billion for the 2023 full year, a 29 percent drop compared to its highest-ever annual profit of $39.9 billion in the year prior, but still a colossal amount of money by any standard.
ExxonMobil beat estimates in its 2023 financial year, ending with $36 billion as profits, a performance that enabled the company to distribute $32 billion to shareholders via buybacks and dividends last year, up from $29.8 million a year earlier.
As for Aramco, it posted a 23 percent decline in net profits in the third quarter for September last year, down to $32.6 billion from $42.4 billion the same time last year, but it was still a good performance by the company.
Aramco, Shell, and ExxonMobil posted colossal amounts as profits in their business last year, but they can't make these profits without lying about zeroing out greenhouse gas emissions, without misleading people about addressing the problem of plastic pollution, without cutting corners when embarking on recycling plastic.
According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), the world could witness a rise in oil supply to a new record of 103 million barrels per day, fuelled by production by the U.S., Brazil, Guyana, and Canada.
On the issue of plastic production, the world could witness a rise to approximately 590 million metric tons of global thermoplastics production by 2050, compared to estimates of 445.25 million metric tons in 2025.
As for recycling, the global plastic recycling market could reach $77.89 billion by 2031 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.71 percent during the forecast period for 2024-2031, but with less than ten percent of plastic products recycled.
The lies spread by nations and companies in the fossil fuel sector enable the rise in the world's oil supply, as well as worsen the conditions in the plastic sector and ensure less than ten percent of plastic products gets recycled, all intensifying the climate change crisis, which threatens to overwhelm the planet in the foreseeable future.
The use of private vehicles in industrialized countries accounted for 2.7 million barrels of oil use per day during the pre-pandemic period, but if jobs could be carried out from home, opportunities will open for a drastic decrease in oil use per day, since a relationship exists between the use of private cars and work.
Every year, people throw about 20 billion plastic bottles in the trash, but if they develop habits such as carrying reusable bottles with them, opportunities will open for a reduction in the use of plastics.
Every year, oil and plastic production show increases, but if nations develop the idea of a circular economy, opportunities will open for a drastic decline in greenhouse gas emissions and plastic pollution.
If nations develop the idea of a circular economy, while people reduce the usage of plastics and private cars, less reliance will be placed on Big Oil companies, who will lie about recycling plastics, lie about the current plastic pollution, and lie about fossil fuel. They will lie about anything.

It's ironically fitting that Shell named their drilling project in the US Gulf of Mexico "Perdido", as in "lost", or "tainted", or "Irreparable." It's like they've done the calculations on just how much harm this drilling will do to the Earth.
